Course Roadmap: Personal Reflections
The course Roadmap assignment required learners to create four course units in their desired subject. I chose an online ELA course module. The assignment was relatively easy. I was initially confused about whether to do the assignment within the template.
I listed three course outcomes for my ELA course:
- The course will demonstrate and teach the standard ELA comprehension for 5th-grade students in the areas of English, Reading, and Vocabulary.
- In Read & Comprehend skills: students will explore and attain knowledge in text structure elements such as Narrative, Descriptive, Cause/Effect, Problem/Solution, Sequencing, and Chronological text structure.
- In Language Writing & Grammar: Students will attain and be able to show knowledge in sentence structure/sentence parts.
In Unit 1 Read and Comprehend Text Structure course objectives, students will Identify the elements of narrative writing , such as characters, setting, and plot. Identify the element of descriptive and compare/contrast text structure and signal words used in these types of structures. Assessments include knowledge checks and quizzes on elements in narrative writing.
In the Unit 2 Sentence and Sentence Parts course objective, students will be able to explain what makes up a compound sentence and show how to construct a compound sentence.
In the Unit 3 Spelling & Vocabulary course objective, students will show knowledge of and define the meaning/definition of words in the unit, such as Narrative, Informative, descriptive, sequential, chronological, cause/effect, and compare/contrast text structures.
In the Unit 4 Reading course objective, students will demonstrate the ability to write different types of narrative and informative writing.
The feedback given by my peers gave insight into areas for improvement within my course roadmap. One peer made me aware that I did not fill in the first page of the course road map that included the Course Description. textbook and course outcome. Another peer stated I should use other words such as define, compare, and contrast to describe my course objectives. I initially used identity as the main word to describe my course objective. In my revised roadmap, I used to demonstrate, define, and will show to describe my objectives. One question raised by my peers was, “How will I measure the transfer of learning”? I was given instructions on how to match assessment types with the verbs on the objectives’ writing cheat sheet. I value the feedback and suggestions provided by my peers. I could go back and correct vital areas that were done incorrectly within my course roadmap. Overall, my peers stated that I had established an excellent foundation for the course roadmap. I now have more information and knowledge on developing my course roadmap during the next phase.
